Nate sighed, his body still trembling and sweaty from their intense fucking.

She laid next to him, in silence, and he wondered if their hookup was about to become awkward. After all, they never discussed rules besides this being a one-night thing. Should she spend the night? Should he tell her this was her choice? Well, of course it was her choice. What did he want?

She ran her fingers on his chest, her fingertips curling his hair, and a delicious shiver went through him. Hmm… yes, he knew exactly what he wanted. To be with her and never let go. But he couldn’t—for practical reasons. Was it worth it to ruin it all because of sex? Even though… his gut curled.

Something deep inside him protested. Like he knew change was afoot. A connection he couldn’t shake off.

Also… realization came down upon him. She had a live-in boyfriend. His entire body tensed up. He’d completely overlooked that fact moments earlier. But now, it was like a red flag waving in front of a raging bull. Fuck.

“What happened?” she asked, propping herself on one elbow to look at him. “It’s like I can see thought bubbles over your head, just don’t know what’s in them.”

“Gustavo. Your boyfriend.” As much as a sleazeball as the guy could be, Nate hated that he’d been the reason why she cheated on him. Also, a part of him felt like from now on, he became possessive over her, and couldn’t picture her going home to another man. And that complicated his pragmatism.

She gave him an easy smile. “Gustavo is my cat.”

A fresh wave of relief washed over him, and he loosened his jaw. Of course… Self-absorbed male. She’d been worried to return to him. She’d probably mentioned she had a cat before, but he didn’t recall if he knew his name. God, was he always so self-involved that he didn’t ask these things? Was he not that much better than Gustavo? “And here I was worried.”

She kissed his nipple. “Worried that a live-in boyfriend would punch out your lights?”

“Worried that he’d be needing crutches.”

Her chuckle reverberated through him. It was light, infectious, and fun. “You’re both safe. He hisses a bit, but then gets used to new people. Food is his love language.”

“Good.”

She propped herself on her elbow and her expression grew serious. “You didn’t just have sex with me because you thought I was taken and that’s a weird kink, right?”

He caught a wavy strand of her hair and curled it with his finger. “God, no. You really have the worst idea of me.” We have to change that.

“Well, I don’t know… you’re used to a lot of more, hmmm, experienced and striking women I’m sure. I didn’t know if I had enough to hold your, hmmm, interest.”

“Now you know, right?”

She batted her eyelashes, playfully. “Enlighten me.”

How could he even get started? How could he tell her he felt like he didn’t know his assistant at all, and yet when they were together like this, it seemed like none of it mattered.
